Uber say DBS checks same as licensed London taxis, but does tech giant speak with a fork tongue?

It has been reported in the Evening Standard that MPs have called for TfL to strip Uber of their operators license amid serious concerns surrounding the safety of the tech giants operation. You would be forgiven for thinking that this was the main story here,  you would however be wrong. 

The story here is the somewhat curious statement issued by Uber. The statement goes as follows:-

Drivers who use Uber are licensed by Transport for London and have been through the same enhanced background checks as black cab drivers. “Our technology goes further to enhance safety with every trip tracked and recorded by GPS and we employ former Met Police officers who work closely with the police.”

Uber are of course entitled to release any statement that they wish but the curious aspect is the first paragraph. It was less than two weeks ago that TfL insisted 13000 Uber drivers had 28 days to obtain new DBS background checks, or risk having their licenses revoked due to potential failures in Onifidos background checks. 

So the question here is, are Uber speaking with a fork tongue in claiming that they perform the same background checks that apply to London taxi drivers, bearing in mind the issues surrounding Onifido's checking processes, which have been brought into question by TfL?
