Uber rides now surpass New Yorks iconic Yellow Taxi
According to reports in NBC Chicago Uber is now more popular than the Yellow Taxis of New York City, with rides hitting 289,000 compared to Yellow cabs 277,000 in July.
This is said to be the result of Uber branching out to transit-starved boroughs outside of Manhattan, especially in The Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and on Staten Island. An Uber spokesperson said "Now, half of all Uber trips begin outside of Manhattan, where we continue to see the fastest growth" The New York Taxi is an icon worldwide just as the London black Taxi is, and it would be a massive loss to see them pushed out by ride-share tech firms like Uber. The figures themselves may in fact be a little miss leading, as stated, they cover surrounding boroughs, Yellow taxis predominantly work the streets of Manhattan.
The future of the Yellow cab is undoubtedly an unstable one, but with Uber battling a number of Federal investigations in the US and hundreds of lawsuits worldwide, the battle is most certainly not over yet. Traditional taxis across the globe no doubt feel the pain of the New York Taxis and understand the struggles they face. Which way the lawsuits and investigations go will determine where this fight goes next. We all watch and wait for the outcome. The championship rounds have just begun. Will either corner deliver a knockout blow? I know who I'm cheering on.
