Uber driver named as suspect in New York City terror attack

Sayfullo Saipov, 29, an Uzbekistan national, has been named as the attacker suspected of mowing down a group of cyclists and pedestrians, in a truck, killing at least 8 people. According to reports in the Guardian , Sayfullo lived in New Jersey and worked as an Uber driver. The attack took place on Manhattan's lower west side, not far from the twin towers memorial site. After mowing down his victims, he jumped from the truck carrying what the authorities believed to be 2 firearms. He was subsequently shot by armed police. Mr Saipov is reported to have been living in the United States since 2010. It's not yet clear of when he started driving for the ride-hailing company Uber, but it's claimed he passed the company's background checks. The 2 suspected firearms turned out to be a pellet gun and paintball gun. The attacker is said to of undergone surgery and is in critical condition in hospital. As reported in the Guardian other media reported that Saipov had been arrested in St Louis, Missouri, last year after he failed to appear in court on a traffic ticket issued in 2015. Â
