Petrol and diesel vehicles to be banned from areas around Shoreditch

A proposed ban on all petrol and diesel cars  in areas around Shoreditch in London has been met dismay by the taxi trade.

The move is supported by both Hackney and Islington councils and could see motorists issued £130 penalties for entering the new “green” areas.

Whilst the roads in question are not through roads the ban will be put in place only during peak commuter periods.

Cyclists will of course have access to the roads, plus ultra low emission vehicles which of course includes the new electric taxi now on the market. 

The roads closed which includes access north of Leonard Street, Rivington Street and Charlotte Road mainly service offices, restaurants and one major hotel. It is not known at this point how drop-offs and deliveries are to be made to buildings in the area during the hours of operation or whether they support the proposal.

Local Hackney councillor Feryal Demirci, said “The streets around Shoreditch suffer from some of the worst air quality in London.

“Ultra low emission streets will have reduced levels of air and noise pollution, make it easier and safer to walk and cycle and improve the character of the area for all residents and businesses. “Our ultimate goal is to reclaim the streets from polluting motor vehicles – this groundbreaking scheme is the first step towards doing that.”
