Woman dies after being hit my one of Uber's autonomous vehicles

A pedestrian has been killed by one of Uber's autonomous vehicles on a street in Arizona. This is the first reported fatal crash involving a self-driving car.

Although there was a vehicle operator inside the car, the vehicle was in the autonomous mode and the time of the crash.

In a statement on Twitter, Uber said:

"Our hearts go out to the victims family. We are fully cooperating with local authorities in their investigation of this incident "

Uber have now paused their self-driving car operations in Phoenix, Pittsburgh, San Francisco and Toronto. Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said in a Tweet:

"Some incredibly sad news out of Arizona. We're thinking of the victims family as we work with local enforcement to understand what happened "
