Mayor should repair Hammersmith Bridge with cash from failed cycle crossing according to Tory rival

It's been revealed that Conservative mayoral candidate Shaun Bailey has called on London Mayor Sadiq Khan to divert funds away from the failed Rotherhithe cycle crossing and use them for Hammersmith Bridge reparations.
A planned cycle and foot bridge from Canary Wharf to Rotherhithe was shelved last week after costs were expected to run in-excess of £600 million.
Shaun Bailey said the Mayor should use the money, which was earmarked for the Rotherhithe Crossing, to reopen the 132 year old bridge in West London.
Hammersmith Bridge has been closed to vehicles since April when faults were discovered in the structure’s footings.
According to the Evening Standard Mr Bailey said: “Now that the Mayor and Transport for London (TfL) have decided to pause their expensive Rotherhithe Crossing they should stop messing about and put the funds into repairing the bridge that already exists.”
The bridge, which needs approximately £40 million worth of repairs has been the subject of a major row between TfL and Hammersmith and Fulham council over who should fund the repairs, with the Mayor stating that no plan would be forthcoming from TfL until August.
A spokesperson for Mr Khan said he has asked TfL to work closely with the Hammersmith and Fulham council on drawing up plans for repairing the bridge.
