According to new research by FREENOW, almost half of Brits (46%) are set to travel abroad this year. The study examines travel trends for popular summer holiday destinations across Europe.

The research highlights that when it comes to airport transfers, taxis and minicabs are deemed the most convenient means of travel by over 8 in 10 respondents (83%). Public transport emerged as the second most popular choice (47%). FREENOW's data further reveals that Monday, Saturday, and Sunday between 5-8 am, 11am-4pm, and after 8pm are the least busy periods for journeys to London airports.

City breaks to Paris and Rome remain the top choices for Brits, followed by Madrid (32%) and Athens (24%). FREENOW's findings indicate that 81% of people consider taxis the best way to get around these cities, while approximately half are willing to try public transport, and over a quarter (27%) prefer exploring on foot.

FREENOW also provides insights into the approximate costs and travel times from popular European airports. The average fare from Charles De Gaulle Airport to reach Paris is €55, while from Fiumicino Leonardo Da Vinci Airport to reach Rome city centre, it amounts to €50. Moreover, it costs around €30 to travel from Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport to reach the Spanish capital, with travel times spanning between 30-40 minutes.

Interestingly, London ranks as the fourth most popular city break destination among Europeans, trailing Rome, Paris, and Madrid. Summer city activities most favored by survey participants include music festivals (46%), enjoying a rooftop bar (45%), and sunbathing in the park (38%).

Mariusz Zabrocki, UK General Manager at FREENOW, said: “The data indicates that cities continue to be immensely popular among UK and other European holiday makers this summer. In addition to the traditional seaside holiday, travellers are still drawn to vibrant cities offering unique experiences, ranging from music festivals to engaging outdoor cultural events.

“Interestingly, the research also shows that people are willing to invest in transport while on holiday, with taxis emerging as the preferred mode of transport. FREENOW is delighted to be available across 150 cities and look forward to welcoming passengers from across Europe over the coming months.”
