Another three cars torched in South African taxi feud

14 Sep 2017

An ongoing feud between traditional South African taxi drivers and unregulated ride-hailing services like Uber and Taxify has escalated into further violent clashes.

Three vehicles are said to have been torched using petrol bombs according to police sources.

Reuters are reporting that drivers of the controversial app services have been facing threats from longstanding local taxi drivers.

The three vehicles burnt out are just the latest in a line of disturbances between the two parties. Only last week one Uber vehicle and two other taxis were set alight.

Police Captain Daniel Mavimbela said "The vehicle was alight after he had alighted from it. Another Taxify vehicle was set on fire at a different location. One of the vehicles was burnt out completely, while the second on had slight damages,”

No arrests have been made at this stage.
