LEVC loses black cab trademark appeal

1 Nov 2017

London taxi manufacturer LEVC have lost its appeal to trademark the design of the black cab.

Both Court of Appeal judges, Lord Justice Floyd and Lord Justice Kitchin, agreed to uphold the original ruling made in January 2016 by a High Court judge.

The dispute continues as the High Court adjudged the London taxi to not be a "valid registered trademark" and said it fell short on "distinctive character".

The newly revamped London Electric Vehicle Company are likely to continue the dispute at the Supreme Court.

The latest news will come as a blow to the Coventry-based manufacturer. Without holding trademark on the iconic vehicle the market will remain open for other car makers to offer cheaper alternatives to drivers.
