Dundee cabbie has his back broken in brutal attack

19 Dec 2017

A taxi driver has had his back broken during an assault by two men in Dundee.

The attack took place in Stobswell, on Saturday 16 December, when the taxi driver confronted the men after one of them kicked his vehicle. As the driver exited his taxi he was attacked by two men who have left him with serious back injuries that are being treated at Ninewells Hospital.

A spokesperson for Tele Taxis said:

“Our driver had gone to collect a fare on Park Avenue.

“Shortly after collecting the passenger, a man kicked the vehicle. The driver went out to ask why the man had done that and the two started remonstrating.

“A struggle took place before our driver was attacked by another man.

“The driver managed to get back into the vehicle before asking the customer to call for an ambulance.

“Our colleague is in Ninewells Hospital with a broken back and is likely to be off his work for three months following the incident.”

Dundee's Unite Union Taxi branch secretary, Chris Elder added:

“This is certainly one of the worst instances I’ve heard of.

“My sympathies are with the driver — no one should have to endure that type of behaviour during work.

“The guy is only serving the public and shouldn’t be treated like that.”

The police are asking for anyone with any information to come forward.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said:

“We would like to trace two males, both about 5ft 10ins and in their late teens or early twenties, one wearing a grey tracksuit and the other wearing a purple top with white writing on it.

“If you have any information that could help our inquiries, please call 101 or speak to any police officer. Our reference is CR/32735/17.”
