Uber succeed in French legal battle on employment status

8 Feb 2018

The controversial ride-hailing app Uber have won a French legal case relating to the employment status of one of its drivers.

In stark contrast to the UK ruling, where it was found that Uber should be classed as an employer, the French tribunal found the app to be "in the business of intermediation and not that of a transportation service" meaning drivers should be classed as self-employed.

The ruling has come as a surprise to many given that Europe's top court recently stated Uber are to be classed as a transportation service rather than a digital one.

Florian Menard, the Uber driver arguing the case in court, has one month to appeal the decision.
