Uber set for Barcelona... again

13 Mar 2018

Controversial ride hailing app Uber are set to take a second bite at the Catalan transport market by launching UberX in Barcelona.

The private hire firm were faced with heavy resistance from local taxi drivers after Uber’s first attempt to capture the popular Spanish market failed. The US company, headed up by Travis Kalanick at the time, were forced to shut down as the UberPOP service launched failed to use professional and fully licensed drivers.

Uber now propose operating its popular UberX service to meet local regulations second time round.

Uber General Manager for Southwest Europe Carles Lloret admitted “We made mistakes along the way,"

Lloret went on to say via a statement on Uber Newsroom “We are changing the way we do business, putting integrity at the core of every decision we make and working hard to earn the trust of the cities in which we operate. Barcelona is no exception."

"We are fully committed to working with the entire sector - including taxis - to improve mobility in Barcelona together,"

Taxi drivers in Barcelona may not be fully on board with that last statement!
