Glasgow Uber driver has licence suspended over sex assault prosecution

3 Apr 2018

An Uber driver from Glasgow has had his private hire licence suspended after being bailed by a court on a charge of sexual assault.

Mohammed Waqas Ali, 42, from Pollokshields, faced the areas Licensing and Regulatory Committee after allegedly committing a sexual assault in January of this year.

The meeting however, descended into chaos when it emerged that Mr Ali's English was so poor that he couldn't communicate properly with Councillor Rhiannon Spear,  who then asked for assistance from Bailie John Kane, who also failed in communicating with Mr Ali.

Eventually Bailie Hanif Raja along with Mr Ali's friend, Nur Mohammed managed to successfully translate proceedings.

Mr Ali failed to convince the committee the he should be able to keep his licence and has been subsequently suspended from driving a PHV until January 2019.

Mr Ali appeared in court on February 19th and pleaded not guilty to the sexual assault charge.
