New York Taxi Workers Alliance call for cap on Uber and Lyft after 6 suicides in 7 months

25 Jun 2018

New York's yellow cab community have seen six drivers take their own life in seven months, as the value of their medallions plummet by up to 75%, and the proliferation of Uber and Lyft making it almost impossible for the cabbies to earn a viable living.

The beleaguered cabbies say that the problem stems from the lack of control on the number of Uber and Lyft vehicles flooding New York City.

The latest death triggered cabbies into staging a demo at City Hall, demands included a cap on Uber and Lyft numbers as well as a fare increase.

Bill de Blasio, the mayor of New York, called for a cap on the number of Uber and Lyft vehicles in 2015, but was thwarted by virulent lobbying from Uber.
