London Transport Committee set to publish report on the taxi and private hire industry next week

23 Mar 2019

The Transport Committee at the London Assembly are set to publish a follow-up report on the taxi and private hire industry next week.

Guests from both taxi and private hire industries attended an open meeting back in October 2018. In a heated debate at City Hall today taxi representatives told officials the trade is "no longer economically viable" and that they are watching a “dying industry”.

Taxi representatives during the meeting highlighted the need for a clear definition to plying for hire and expressed their anger that this was continuing to be ignored. Traffic, loss of road space and the cost of the new electric taxi also featured highly on concerns.

The committee has since suggested that the current approach to regulate the private hire market in London needs to adapt to reflect changes in the sector and give Transport for London the ability to raise standards.

The follow-up report is set to be published on Wednesday 27th March 2019.
