New licensing rules will see cabs in East Riding required to have internal CCTV

10 Apr 2019

It's been revealed in Hull Live that all cabs in East Riding will be have to have internal CCTV operating in their vehicles by next April.

Just over 200 of the 328 licensed drivers in the area are already carrying  CCTV as well as dashcam systems in their vehicles voluntarily, after an initiative launched by East Riding Council just over three years ago

However, from 2020 all remaining cab drivers will have to install CCTV systems in their vehicles or face having their licences revoked.

East Riding's council ratfied the move this week, with the  new rule applying to both private hire and taxi drivers.

Councillor Shaun Horton, portfolio holder with responsibility for licensing, stated that the voluntary scheme had been well received by both drivers and passengers.

It is believed the the uptake of internal CCTV has led to a reduction in crimed against drivers.

It was also revealed that CCTV footage has been used by the authorities as evidence in investigations into cases of assault, theft and burglary, as well as countering false allegations made by passengers against drivers.
