Cabbies to sue Queensland State Government over Uber

13 Apr 2019

It's been revealed in The Daily Mail that almost 1,000 cabbies are joining forces with each other to sue the Queensland State Government over the proliferation of Uber.

The taxi drivers have seen the value of their medallions plunge from $500,000 to around $60,000 in just five years.

As a result of what is seen as unfair competition, the complainants have filed a claim to the Supreme Court, arguing that the state engaged in 'unconscionable conduct' because ridesharing companies, such as Uber, do not pay for taxi licences but share the same rights.

It is believed that the 956 out of 1350 taxi drivers could seek hundreds of millions of dollars from the Queensland State.Government under Australian Consumer Law, which would include compensation and damages for breach of contract, according to their lawyer John Maitland.
