Kind hearted cabbie comes to the rescue of stranded commuters in Hebburn

8 Jul 2019

A kind hearted cabbie came to the rescue of stranded commuters after problems with the Metro at Hebburn.

The Shields Gazette reported that 29 year old Katie Barron found that there were 30 minute delays out of Hebburn Station at 6.30am on Friday 5 July.

However, Katie only had 45 minutes to get to Newcastle Central Station, to catch her train to Leeds.

Katie then got into a cab, along with three other passengers, making her train with just over 5 minutes to spare.

The fare was paid by one of her fellow passengers. However, another passenger in the cab was then going to walk the rest of her journey to the Royal Victoria Infirmary to start work.

Having none of it, the cabbie then insisted on taking the passenger the rest of the way free of charge so that she would not be late for her shift.

Katie, from Hebburn, said: "It was a nice gesture.”

Katie has also thanked her fellow passenger who paid for her share of the fare after the cab’s card facility was unavailable.

Instead of taking Katie's money in return, the other passenger, who is a volunteer at the Freeman Hospital in Heaton, asked for the money to be donated to Macmillan Cancer Support, Katie has duly obliged.
