Taxi drivers in Torquay have been left livid after a man who turned his mobility scooter into a taxi service for late-night revellers has been seen moving in on their potential customers.
The man has been seen roaming the streets just as party goers leave pubs and bars. Residents have reported seeing him charging drinkers for a ride between venues or for a lift home.
As reported in Devon Live, one witness - who wished to remain anonymous - said he had seen 'about five people hanging off the side' at times.
Local cabbies have been quick to point out that the man is flouting rules by not having a licence, insurance or a safe vehicle to carry paying passengers.
One angry driver said: "You see it zooming around the harbour area and Debenhams, charging around with flashing lights on - it has to be seen to be believed."
Eye witnesses have said they've even seen him put a mattress on the scooter and go around from pub to pub picking up people and dropping them off for a fee.
Taxi drivers say he's been offering up paid rides on his mobility scooter, which reaches speeds of around 20mph, for a couple of months now unchallenged.
Drivers have stressed that what he is doing is totally illegal and say he's even fixed a taxi sign the scooter.
One driver said: "He is not a taxi but he has a taxi sign on it, I don’t think he has a licence and i’ll be he (sic) doesn’t have insurance either.
"We have to pay for licensing and things like that."
The angry driver said If nothing is done about it, he may as well consider getting one himself.
According to the complaints, the man has now made a lot of friends who regularly use his services.
