Woman gives birth to boy in back of London taxi

6 Aug 2019

A London cabbie got a little bit more than he bargained for on a journey between Clapham and St Thomas's Hospital after a woman gave birth in the back of his taxi.

The drama began after 44 year old taxi driver Robert Fenlon picked up Basak Odemis and her husband Ozgur after her contractions started at around 11.30pm last Wednesday.

Mr Fenlon was asked to get to hospital as fast as he could, however en-route to the hospital Mrs Odemis's waters broke.

The cabbie told the Evening Standard that he then "put his foot down" so as to make it to the hospital in time.

Upon arriving at St Thomas's Hospital, the cabbie rushed in to alert the medical team, who then discovered that the baby's head had started to appear and had to deliver the baby there and then.

Mr Fenlon explained that three medics then had to get into the cab to help deliver the baby, who was named Atlas.

Mr Odemis thanked the cabbie and stated that he refused to take any payment despite the mess inside the cab, and even went back to the hospital the following day to take them home, making a very tricky situation much easier.

Mr Fenlon said that it was something that he would never forget.
