Hull cabbie assaulted and run over during violent road rage attack

18 Aug 2019

A Hull cabbie was left with facial injuries and a fractured leg after a reported road rage incident turned terrifyingly violent.

Shan Ilyas said he feels “lucky to be alive” after the attack, and says he is now too terrified to return to his job.

The alleged incident started when Ilyas was dropping off a passenger. The driver of the vehicle behind beeped at him and swore at him by way of a middle finger gesture.

Mr Ilyas retaliated by swearing back at the man.

Mr Ilyas said the incident escalated when he came to a stop at a set of traffic lights and the angered man got out of his vehicle and began attacking him.

As reported on Hull Live, the 30-year-old, who has been a cabbie for 10 years, said: “He came out from his car and punched me in the face. I got out of the car to phone police and as I was stood there he ran back to his car and hit me.

“I was on the floor and then he went to the other side of the road and drove off. If he’d carried on driving my head would have gone under his tyres and I feel lucky to be alive.”

Mr Ilyas said he didn't fight back against the attacker because he feared losing his licence.

He added that he will now take some time off to reevaluate his future.

Humberside Police have confirmed that a man has been arrested in connection with the attack on Mr Ilyas, which happened shortly after 6pm on Wednesday 14 August.

A spokeswoman for the force said: “A man has been arrested following reports of an assault in Hessle Road shortly after 6.10pm on Wednesday, August 14. He remains in our custody while enquiries continue.

“It was reported that the victim was driving when he and another driver had a disagreement. The other driver allegedly then assaulted the man before leaving the area.

“The victim suffered what are thought to be serious but not life-threatening injuries in the incident.”
