Uber says Sadiq Khan is right to pedestrianise Oxford Street

Plans to stop through traffic on Oxford Street have been backed by minicab firm Uber in a bid to to sweeten relations with City Hall after losing it operators licence in London. The ride-hailing company said in its consultation submission: “We share the mayor’s commitment to ensuring the centre of London remains an attractive place for people to work, visit and spend their time - and that the whole city remains an area in which people want to live. “We agree that traffic free areas can help meet this goal by encouraging more people to use public transport to access areas like Oxford Street, reducing the need for Londoners to drive their own vehicle into the area.” London Mayor Sadiq Khan plans to remove all vehicles from the busy shopping district, which includes black cabs and several working taxi ranks, between Orchard Street and Oxford Circus. However, new taxi ranks will be set up in the surrounding areas of Oxford Street for driver to pick up and set down. All black taxi representatives are staunchly against the plans proposed however the pedestrianised plans are due to commence late 2018.
