Hundreds of Black Taxi drivers shut down Wolverhampton city centre in protest against Uber

Michael Murphy

Hundreds of black taxi drivers from Coventry descended on Wolverhampton city centre on Thursday to protest against the council who have issued thousands of licences to Uber drivers that are now roaming across cities threatening their livelihoods. Backed by the Unite union, Taxi drivers started their protest outside Wolverhampton Science Park before driving in convoy into the city centre. Council bosses hit out at taxi drivers saying the protest should be at Westminster not Wolves. Council staff handed out bottles of water to anyone who was caught up in the traffic caused by the demonstration.

The protest ended outside Wolverhampton Civic Centre. According to a report in the Express and Star , a protest by the West Midlands Private Hire Drivers Association was also due to take place on the same day but was called off after council bosses threatened anyone taking part with legal action.
