Cabbie arrested after chasing thugs who threw a pancake at his vehicle

Steve Kenton

A taxi driver, and former olympian has been arrested and charged by police after confronting thugs who threw a pancake at his cab.

Fijian, Isireli Naikelekelevesi, a father of six, who served in the armed forces, and is an ex-Olympic and Commonwealth Games 800m runner, chased the thugs for approximately 200 meters, before pushing one of them into a stream.

The Daily Record reported how the cabbie had stopped to let the four boys cross the road. They then started swearing at Naikelekelevesi, with one of the teenagers a 13-year-old boy then throwing a pancake at his car.

The cabbie then got out of his vehicle and asked the boy why he did it, the response was for the boys to laugh at him and run off.

Naikelekelevesi then chased the boys before pushing the 13-year-old into the burn so as to "get his feet wet" according to the cabbie. The boys then started to attack his cab by kicking it.

A complaint was made to the police by the boys family, resulting in the cabbie being arrested and charged by police. He was also forced to resign from driving a cab for Mundole Taxis in Forres, Moray.

Naikelekelevesi received a warning from the Procurator Fiscal, however, a representative for Police Chief Constable, Iain Livingstone has asked Moray councillors to consider if the cabbie is a threat to public safety, and whether he is, or is no longer, a fit and proper person to hold a taxi driver’s licence.

Moray councillors then decided that 42-year-old Naikelekelevesi should keep his licence.
