Crackdown on drivers illegally parking on taxi ranks in Glasgow

Steve Kenton

A crackdown on illegal parking on taxi ranks across Glasgow has seen almost 300 tickets issued to drivers sinve November 2018.

Penalty charge notices were issued against 291 vehicles, which included private hire cars as well as privately owned cars.

Councillor Alex Wilson, chairman of the council’s licensing and regulatory committee stated that taxis are key part of the city’s transport system and the ranks have an essential role in people being able hire a cab.

The Evening Times reported that 20 additional spaces had been made available to taxis in the last 2 years.

Calum Anderson, chairman of the Glasgow CAB Section at Unite the Union, said: “It is very inconsiderate for people to park in taxi ranks."

He then went on to say that the situation was wholly unacceptable, with the problem being completely out of control.

Tickets were issued to vehicles left on ranks at Sauchiehall Street, Queen Margaret Drive, Clarendon Place at St George’s Cross, Kilmarnock Road in Shawlands and Hardgate Road outside the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
