Derbyshire police issue warning after fake cabbie attempts to pick up young women

Steve Kenton

A Police warning  has been issued after a fake cabbie attempted to pick up young women in Derby city centre.

Officers have asked people to be on their guard after reports of a man pretending to be a cab driver attempting to lure a young woman into his car outside The Standing Order, in Irongate.

22 year old Rosie Baker, was heading home after a night out when she was accosted by a driver who asked her if she had ordered a taxi.

When the driver was challenged by quick thinking Rosie as to what company he worked for, the  driver claimed he was employed by PJ Cars, however before the student could take down the drivers details he sped off.

Rosie claimed that her friend then saw the same vehicle operating outside the Wetherspoon pub the following night on February 23.

According to a report in the  Derby Telegraph  the driver was asking other young women if they had ordered a taxi.

Rosie said the incident left her extremely concerned and as a result felt compelled to report the incident to police.

Muddasser Ahmed, owner of PJ Cars said that the incident had absolutely nothing to do with his company.

A spokesman for Derbyshire police said "the force is aware of the incident and is urging anyone with any information to get in touch." The spokesman went on to say: "Officers are aware of this incident and our Licensing Team is working with Derby City Council, as the local licencing authority, to investigate further. "Anyone with any information is asked to contact us on 101, quoting reference number 950 of February 23."
