DNA match on Channel 4’s 24 hours in police custody captures rapist cabbie

A Luton cabbie has been arrested after Channel 4’s 24 hours in Police Custody revealed that a DNA match has linked him to two rapes.

A 22 year old woman and a 15 year old girl were raped in 2007, despite a police investigation, which included the taking of DNA samples, their attacker was still at large a decade later. 

However in September 2017, cabbie Shipu Ahmed, who was 36 at the time, was questioned by police after he was arrested for an unrelated incident.

After being swabbed for DNA, he was subsequently linked to the two rapes and arrested for the offences. The Channel 4 tv program 24 Hours in Police Custody, which was aired on March 11 2019, then showed Detective Ginnette Amico questioning the cabbie, saying: “I think you weren’t having much sex at the time. By your own admission, you weren’t very sexually experienced and you saw drunk, alone females as an easy target.” DC Jon Wheeler said to Ahmed; “You’ve been very lucky for the past 10 years that you’ve never been arrested and your DNA has never been obtained. It must have been a real shock this morning was it?” Detective Amico said on the show that : “ Behind every unsolved rape case there will be a victim who has not received justice, It’s my job not to leave any stone unturned.”
