Five autonomous vehicles to begin trialling in Bromley and Croydon

Autonomous vehicles have finally arrived in London as "supervised tests" of driverless cars have been given the go ahead  to trial in Bromley and Croydon. 

The trials are part of an inotiative to eventually roll out an autonomous, ride-sharing service across London. 

The autonomous vehicles will initially have a human in the driver seat monitoring how the vehicle performs, only taking control if an accident looks imminent. Technology company, FiveAI have begun collecting data for the impending London trial. Vehicles with built-in sensors have been roaming around London's streets enabling the software to gather information on the capitals road layout.

Transport for London, along with Bromley and Croydon councils have given the go-ahead for the scheme to proceed

FiveAI says its autonomous car service should help reduce congestion, emissions, incidents and the cost and time of journeys in London - which will be music to the ears of Mayor Sadiq Khan.  According to  This is Money  FiveAI's chief executive Stan Boland stayes that the company will keep residents informed along the way and work closely with the London Boroughs involved, as well as TfL. In 2017, as part of a project called "Streetwise", FiveAI was part of a goup of companies which were awarded a grant in excess of  £12m by the Government to develop software for autonomous cars.
