An Edinburgh woman has vowed never to use ride-sharing app Uber again after she was hit with a surge charge that left her nearly £100 out of pocket over the weekend. Kim McAllister booked a car to take her to Fountainbridge in the early hours of Sunday. The trip would normally cost around £35, but because the app was currently experiencing a surge, the journey ended up costing a whopping £129. 

Although the next day she admitted remembering the surge, which was x3.7, showing on the app at the time of booking, she said she didn't realise its significance.

Kim is now warning people on social media of the dangers of falling foul of the same charge she did. 

Kim said she contacted Uber about the high fare and asked for some of the money to be refunded but they refused.  She added that some sort of "extra surge warning" should be introduced on the app so others don't get caught out with such inflated fares."

As a report in the Edinburgh Live suggested, Kim said she would never use Uber again after the incident, saying there are other options where she lives in Edinburgh.

A spokesperson for Uber said: "The Uber app uses dynamic pricing to make sure that people can always get a car when they need it. When large numbers of people in a specific area want a ride at the same time and there aren't enough available cars, fares automatically rise to encourage more drivers to go to the busy area. 

"Users always see a fare estimate in advance so they have the choice to book a car, share the trip with others or wait until fares go down.”
