KFC worker convicted after attack on taxi

Steve Kenton

A man who attacked a taxi whilst heavily intoxicated has pleaded guilty to causing criminal damage.

22 year old Joel Aggrey, a KFC worker from Wellinger Way, Braunstone, Leicester, launched the attack, smashing the taxi’s window with a flying kick and then punching the vehicle before walking off.

The incident took place outside a nightclub in Leicester city centre as the taxi driver was picking up a fare.

Prosecutor Sally Bedford told Leicester Magistrates' court that the cabbie was outside Arkade nightclub in Gravel Street, Leicester, picking up a fare at around 6am on 17 February.

While the cabbie had his fare in the back of the vehicle the defendant ran up to the taxi and performed a flying kick, smashing the window, before punching the door several times.

After the cabbie had contacted the police, CCTV was used to locate Aggrey and he was arrested later that morning.

Ms Bedford told the court that when Aggrey was arrested he claimed he had no recollection of the incident but something had made him angry. He also accepted responsibility for the damage to the cab.

The court heard that Leicestershire police had initially given the defendant the opportunity to accept a caution and pay for the damage caused. However he failed to pay and was subsequently charged by police.

The Leicester Mercury reported that Aggrey was handed down a 12-month community order and ordered to pay the £650 compensation in full to the taxi driver.
