Convoy of taxis escorted by police as Merseyside cabbies take children for fun day out

A convoy of taxis were escorted by police through the streets of Merseyside yesterday as generous cabbies took time out from work for their annual children's charity day out.

Over 50 taxis travelled from Wavertree to New Brighton for the event, which is now in its 70th year.

Partially sighted and blind children from across the city were picked up from the Royal School for the Blind, in Wavertree, and St Vincent's School, in West Derby as they set off for lunch in New Brighton and an afternoon of fun at the fairground.

The colourful procession was so big that drivers were assisted by officers from Merseyside Police who helped block traffic to keep the convoy together. A Merseyside Police spokesperson said on Twitter: “Thanks to everyone for their patience this morning.

"A 55 vehicle convey takes some escorting but all the children were delivered safe."

Whilst one of the cabbies who took part in the event said via Twitter: "Off to New Brighton with all the other cabbies on the Annual Blind Children’s Outing.

"If you see us on the road give us a wave and a beep."
