Bury cabbies take part in new training on safeguarding issues

Steve Kenton

Taxi and private hire drivers in Bury have undertaken training sessions as part of a new initiative to raise awareness over safeguarding issues.

The Bury Times revealed that a group of drivers, predominantly from the two main private hire firms completed a programme called Trust 2 Ride.

The programme examines case studies which can highlight signs that drivers should be looking out for.

All of the drivers were awarded certificates by the council's trading standards and licensing service at Bury Town Hall.

The initiative will now be made available to the remaining taxi and private hire drivers licensed in the region, and will be a mandatory requirement for all future applicants. It was recognised by chair of the licensing and safety panel, Councillor Tahr Rafiq, that taxi and private hire drivers in the region have an important role in safeguarding the public. He also described them as the eyes and ears on the street.
