Great Yarmouth taxi rank proposals leave cabbies concerned at being put in a "dead-area"

Taxi drivers in Great Yarmouth have expressed concerns that the relocation of a cab rank would leave them in a "dead area".
A proposal to move the Market Gates Shopping Centre taxi rank will be discussed at a meeting of Great Yarmouth Borough Council's licensing committee on 22 July.

The Great Yarmouth Mercury reported that the taxi rank, which is next to the Troll Cart pub, is split into three sections, with the front of the rank accomodating both taxis and buses, the middle section being buses only and the rear of the rank accomodating taxis only.
In a report which was undertaken by Norfolk County Council officials, one of the issues highlighted was that when the ranks are full, buses end up blocking the road, forcing passengers to embark and disembark on the road.
Rank changes could include a 26-metre long bus bay at the northern end of the lay-by, with a 45 metre long taxi rank in the remainder of the lay-by, and a new rank to the south of Market Gates Shopping Centre which would be 22 meters long.
However, in the report a number of taxi drivers objected to the proposals, with one driver claiming that the area was a "dead area".
Another driver stated within the objections that users of the new rank would be the drivers that do not want to be hired.
The report stated that while the comments have been taken into consideration the proposals remain the same.
