Tyneside joyrider avoids jail after stealing cab

A joyrider who ruined a cabbie’s christmas, causing him to lose £3,000 in earnings after stealing his cab has escaped a prison sentence.

27 year old Connor Studholme, from Grasmere Avenue, Walker, stole the cabbie's Silver Mondeo on Christmas Eve, 2018.

The vehicle was parked outside a property in Byker, where the cabbie was a guest, when the vehicle was stolen by Studholme.

North Tyneside Magistrates' Court heard how the cabbie lost around £3,000 in income over the Christmas period due to Studholme crashing the vehicle after stealing it.

The Chronicle reported that Studholme pleaded guilty to five charges relating to the incident, including aggravated vehicle taking, failing to stop, failing to report an accident and driving without a licence or the correct insurance.

Deputy district judge Natalie Wortley sentenced Studholme to 18 weeks in jail suspended for 18 months and banned from driving for two years.

He was ordered to carry out 240 hours of unpaid work, as well as paying a £150 charge and £85 costs.

He was also made to pay £500 in compensation and pay the victim's £500 insurance excess.
