Dundee taxi drivers furious after personal data leaked to rival company

Steve Kenton

A data breach has left Dundee cabbies fuming, after their personal details were leaked to a rival company who then attempted to poach the drivers.

Taxi union representatives expressed their concern after it was alleged that Dundee City Council breached data protection legislation when drivers’ names and addresses found their way to Dundee City Taxis.

The breach resulted in a number of drivers receiving literature encouraging them to change taxi firms.

A report in the Evening Telegraph suggested that a comprehensive list of taxi operators in the area can be purchased from Dundee's licensing department for around £40.

Unite taxi rep, Chris Elder, said: “I don’t think it’s right that a company can do this.

"The drivers aren’t happy that their names and addresses can be given out."

Recruitment letters were sent out to drivers by Dundee City Taxis boss Qaiser Habib.

Jim Heron, who drives for 505050, said: “I phoned him up and he said they got my address from the council."

Mr Heron then phoned the licencing office at the council who gave confirmation that they had given out his name and address.

A Dundee City Council spokesperson said: "Taxi drivers’ details were available because their applications for licenses were heard in public."
