Teeside cab driver who hid dashcam evidence after mowing man down jailed

A cab driver has been jailed after mowing down and killing a man, and then attempting to hide incriminating dash-cam evidence.
Teeside Crown Court heard that 29 year old Mohammed Naeem of Marton Road, Middlesbrough, threw the dash-cam into the glove compartment of his Skoda Octavia directly after the accident in which pedestrian, William John Joseph Byrne, was tragically killed.
It was revealed that Naeem had commited 70 speeding offences during his six-hour shift prior to the accident, which occurred as the 69 year old grandfather was crossing Ormesby Road.
Rachel Masters, prosecuting, described how Naeem had picked up two passengers from the Pig Iron, in Corporation Road, Middlesbrough, at approximately 10pm on 26 May 2018.
She told the court how the cabbie had hurtled down the A66 at 70mph, before accelerating down Ormesby Road, which is a 30mph zone, at 49mph.
According to an eye-witness, Naeem was doing something in the roof area before colliding with Mr Byrne at a pelican crossing which was Green in the cabbie’s favour.
Naeem's legal representative, Kieran Rainey, apologised on behalf of Naeem.
Teeside Live reported that the cabbie pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving, and Naeem, who had no previous convictions, was jailed by Judge Stephen Ashurst for three years and disqualified from driving for four and a half years.
