Preston police due to meet campaigners calling for hate rant taxi driver to be charged
Police in Preston are due to meet a group of campaigners who are calling for a taxi driver to be charged following a 'hate rant' video which went viral across social media. Zaheer Hussain was released pending further investigation after the footage of him furiously ranting about former Muslims who had become Christians.
The footage saw an outpouring from those who found what he said offensive and a petition was launched calling for his licence to be revoked. The petition went into the thousands.
Hussain was called before Preston City Council’s Taxi and Miscellaneous Committee, after he was arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated harassment, to have his licence reviewed. During the course of the hearing Hussain agreed to hand-in his badge until the completion of the related police investigation and any subsequent legal processes.
As reported by the Preston Blog, emails were seen showing that Preston Police have been deluged with demands from campaigners calling for Hussain to be charged. The Ex-Muslims Preston Association has also called for the police and the CPS to take action.
According to the report in the PB, Preston Police have said that a private meeting will be taking place to discuss the matter with some of the campaigners, but stressed that it's not open for the public. The meeting is understood to be taking place before the end of July.
