Taxi drivers step up their awareness of dementia with specialist training

Taxi drivers at Apollo Taxis based in the town centre have just received dementia awareness training – the first taxi company in Wrexham to organise this training for their staff. The one hour session was delivered by Bev Larkins, a Dementia Champion and Member of Wrexham’s Dementia Friendly Communities Steering Group, at their premises in Charles Street.
Joss Thomas, Specialist Officer for licensing said: “Taxi drivers are the eyes and ears of our streets. They are often in a position to help those with dementia and to be even more aware of what that person is going through has to be a good thing.
"I’d like to thank them all for taking part, particularly as this is a voluntary session and is not required for their licence conditions, and for recognising the significant role they can play in safeguarding our communities.” Debbie Belton, Office Manager, said: “The session was really interesting and very helpful. We all feel better knowing we can help make a difference in a person’s life.
"The session took about an hour and I’d encourage other organisations who play similar roles in the community as we do to take part.”
