Uninsured London private hire driver has vehicle seized after claiming to be mechanic

Steve Kenton

A private hire driver has had his vehicle seized after it emerged that he was uninsured.

The unnamed driver was stopped by police during a routine check at a Transport for London Taxi and Private Hire "stop site" in Westminster.

When stopped the driver admitted to enforcement officers that he was not insured to drive the vehicle and claimed he was not a private hire driver, but a mechanic fixing the car.

Upon investigation, the officers discovered that he was a licensed private hire driver and the vehicle was subsequently seized.

There were no passengers in the vehicle and it is believed that he wasn't working at the time according to police.

45 private hire vehicles (PHV) and 4 taxis were stopped at the site with 6 PHVs found to be non-compliant, no taxis were found to be non-compliant.
