Uber launch new ‘RideCheck’ feature that detects driver detours and crashes

Uber have launched a new passenger safety feature on its app that detects crashes and detours taken by its drivers. The new technology, called RideCheck, uses the data and other sensors in drivers’ smartphones, which can then detect possible crashes or if a trip goes unusually off course.

Uber say when a ‘RideCheck’ is initiated, both the passenger and driver will receive a alert asking if everything is OK. Both parties can then let Uber know through the app that all is well, or if required, call for help using the emergency button or reporting the issue to Uber’s Safety Line. In the event of a crash, Uber claim to be able to help expedite the insurance claims process.

RideCheck is launching in the US, but is planned for more countries in the near future.

Sachin Kansal, Head of Safety Products at Uber, said: “For the past year, we’ve been piloting and refining RideCheck to ensure it works well for our customers and partners.

“Today, I am proud to announce that RideCheck is now available for all riders and drivers in the United States with plans to expand to more countries soon.”
