Winner of first national Parliamentary Taxi Driver of the Year Award announced

Taxi drivers that have gone the extra mile were celebrated today at the first taxi and private hire awards, hosted by Daniel Zerichner MP, Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Taxis. Zia Ahmed from High Wycombe won the award for all of the extra work that he does in the community.

Nominations were put forward by MPs across the country who wanted to shine a light on the great work taxi drivers do every day. The event saw politicians from across parties, come together to celebrate the best taxi drivers in the country. Hosted by Zeichner and sponsored by FREE NOW, the awards ceremony took place in the Palace of Westminster on Tuesday evening. Daniel Zeichner MP said: “I have thoroughly enjoyed hearing about the taxi drivers that go above and beyond to get passengers where they need to be in safety and comfort. “From reading all of the inspiring stories over the past few months to meeting so many taxi drivers this evening, it has been an eye opening process and I am pleased to be able to host this great event.” Alan O’Kelly from FREE NOW commented: “Black cab drivers have been getting people from A to B since the 17th century. Tonight, we heard about the extra effort they go to to ensure passengers get around cities and rural areas safely every day.

“At FREE NOW we were thrilled when asked to sponsor the Awards. We are proud to work with the best taxi drivers in the world and will continue to highlight the important work they do every day.”
