AIRPORTS, RANKS, APPS OR STREET WORK: What’s the FASTEST way to earn as a London taxi driver?

Combining both street hails with app bookings is widely viewed as the fastest way for London taxi drivers to generate income while working in the capital’s licensed taxi trade.
The informal online survey conducted by TaxiPoint’s editor currently suggests that around three in five drivers believe a hybrid approach using both street work and taxi apps delivers the most efficient earnings.
Nearly a third of cabbies said relying on street hails and ranks alone without apps was the best strategy, while only 10% favoured working mainly central London ranks. Just 4% said focusing solely on airport rank work was the most effective way to earn quickly.
Drivers who combine street work with apps typically position themselves just outside the busiest central zones where demand remains strong but competition can be less concentrated. This approach allows drivers to take the first available job whether it comes from a passing hail or a digital booking, increasing the overall turnover of fares throughout a shift.

However, for drivers using apps, managing commission levels is important when adopting this model. Keeping platform fees low while working on services with high passenger demand is viewed as essential to maintaining profitable earnings while sustaining a steady flow of work.
Working patterns across the trade can vary widely depending on a driver’s financial commitments and preferred working style. Drivers earlier in their careers, particularly those with significant household costs such as mortgages or young families, often prioritise maximising daily revenue and may adopt a more flexible mix of street and app-based work.
By contrast, some longer serving drivers with fewer financial pressures may favour working traditional ranks where the pace can be slower but offers more opportunities for social interaction with colleagues during quieter periods.
Airport ranking presents a different dynamic. Heathrow Airport hosts the capital’s largest taxi rank and can provide lucrative long-distance fares. However, drivers report that waiting times for a job can range from two to five hours depending on demand, making daily earnings harder to predict.
While early indications of the driver poll suggest a clear preference for mixed working methods among respondents, drivers across the trade emphasise that there is no single correct approach. Many say efficiency ultimately depends on how effectively a driver manages their time, positioning and operating costs throughout the working day.
