A 35-year-old man from Aldershot is due to be sentenced next month after admitting to threatening a taxi driver with a knife following a dispute over an £8 fare.
Craig Mahon refused to pay the fare after being dropped off in Aldershot on 18 October. He then threatened the driver with a knife before leaving the scene. The driver was not injured during the incident.
Police launched an investigation shortly after the report was made, leading to Mahon’s arrest. He was later charged with threatening a person with a blade or sharply pointed article in a public place, and making off without payment.
Mahon appeared before Basingstoke Magistrates’ Court on 20 October, where he pleaded guilty to both offences. He has been remanded in custody and will be sentenced at Winchester Crown Court on 21 November.
A Hampshire Police spokesperson confirmed that the investigation was swiftly carried out to ensure the safety of taxi drivers and the public following the incident.
Taxi driver safety continues to be a concern across the country, with drivers often facing risks from passengers who refuse to pay or act aggressively.
