A joint enforcement operation led by Avon and Somerset Police has found high compliance levels among taxi and private hire drivers, with only minor issues identified across dozens of vehicle checks.
PC Patrick Quinton, known as the force’s “Taxi Cop”, confirmed that 89 vehicles were stopped and inspected in collaboration with South Gloucestershire licensing officers and the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency. The checks formed part of routine efforts to ensure passenger safety and regulatory compliance within the sector.
PC Quinton said: “We stopped and checked 89 vehicles across our area. I’m delighted to say that the compliance rates were excellent. No bald tyres or other serious defects.”
The operation included vehicle inspections alongside driver checks, with officers conducting eyesight and drug tests. All results were reported as satisfactory, indicating no immediate safety concerns among those tested.
Joint operation with licensing and DVSA results in only six minor notices issued
In total, six Non-Compliance Notices were issued, primarily relating to minor badge issues rather than mechanical faults or serious breaches. Quinton noted that many vehicles inspected were fitted with new tyres, suggesting ongoing investment in vehicle maintenance by drivers.
PC Patrick Quinton added: “I'm delighted to say that the compliance rates were excellent! No bald tyres or other serious defects (I did notice there were a lot of brand new tyres today).
“We carried out some eyesight and drugs tests which were all fine. In total we issued just 6 Non Compliance Notices (mainly for minor badge issues).
“So, if you were stopped and checked today: WELL DONE for your great standards and THANK YOU for your patience and cooperation, particularly with my less experienced colleagues. It's made me a very happy Taxi Cop!”
