Transport for London (TfL) said the A40 Westway in both directions between the Westway roundabout and the Marylebone flyover will reopen to all traffic overnight after a major repair phase is completed within the promised timetable. The route is one of the busiest on TfL’s road network, carrying up to 96,000 vehicles a day.
The latest phase of works centred on replacing two joints on the Marylebone Flyover A40 Westway, infrastructure that allows the structure to expand and contract safely with temperature changes and vehicle movements. TfL said the job was complex specialist work and required a full carriageway closure.
TfL said parts of the structure had reached the end of their service life, with renewal work carried out over a number of years to keep journeys on the A40 safe and reliable. The closure was also used to complete additional work aimed at reducing future disruption, including resurfacing more than a kilometre of carriageway in both directions and carrying out drainage maintenance.
For road users, and taxi and private hire drivers, the reopening removes a major pinch point on a strategic route into and across central London. TfL said the works and associated closures had been planned to minimise disruption to the wider road network as far as possible.
TfL said vital structural works on the A40 Westway will be finished today, allowing one of London’s busiest roads to reopen fully overnight before a further round of smaller weekend closures begins later this week.
Smaller-scale weekend works will now begin from Friday 24 April over four weekends, with completion scheduled for June, a month ahead of schedule. TfL said these closures will be more localised than the full shutdown and urged road users to check travel information before setting out.
Stuart Harvey, TfL's Chief Capital Officer, said: “We’re pleased to confirm that the A40 Westway will be open to the public from this evening. We know the full closure has caused disruption, and I’d like to thank road users and local communities for their patience while this essential work was completed to one of London’s busiest routes.”
