Birmingham private hire driver over £1,000 out of pocket after illegal ply for hire act

A Birmingham City Council licensed private hire driver has been successfully prosecuted for illegally plying for hire.

The unnamed offender was taken to court by the council's licensing team, where the judge slapped six points onto his driving licence for operating without valid insurance.

In addition, the man was ordered to pay a total of £1,300 for the offence. It was not confirmed by the council if the offender will now have his private hire driver's licence revoked.

Only hackney carriage licensed taxi drivers are permitted to pick up passengers who have not pre-booked through a licensed operator.

If a private hire driver licence holder accepts a fare which has not been pre-booked, his hire and reward insurance becomes void.

If caught, as in this case, the offender can expect to pay a large fine and face points on their driving licence along with the likely revocation of their private hire driver's licence.
