Bishop of Southwark recovering after being injured in a London taxi performing emergency stop

Updated: Oct 7, 2024

The Bishop of Southwark, the Rt Revd Christopher Chessun, was hospitalised after a taxi he was travelling in made an emergency stop, resulting in injuries.

The incident occurred early on Tuesday 1 October.

According to Church Times, a spokesperson for the Diocese of Southwark confirmed on Wednesday that Bishop Chessun received medical attention and was in hospital, but “recovering well and receiving excellent care”.

The Bishop was on his way to the installation of Dr Martin Gainsborough as the new Area Bishop of Kingston and the Rt Revd Alastair Cutting as the Area Bishop of Woolwich at the time of the incident. He expressed his gratitude for the support he has received, acknowledging the concern and prayers from the community.

In a letter from the Area Bishops, it was revealed that Bishop Chessun would need surgery, followed by a period of recovery.

In a message shared on social media, Canon Kathryn Fleming, the Precentor of Southwark Cathedral, said: “The very lovely Bishop of Southwark needs our prayers owing an accident on Monday night. I hate that, in effect, we sent him off to be hurt as he left the cathedral that evening after another installation, and so glad that, as ever, we prayed for him in the service.”
