A mystery shopping exercise carried out on Bristol hackney carriage drivers has highlighted concerns over driver badge visibility, despite otherwise positive results across a range of licensing and customer service standards.
The checks, organised this week and shared with drivers by Avon and Somerset Police’s Taxi Cop, PC Patrick Quinton, assessed 10 licensed hackney carriages on issues including vehicle licensing compliance, cleanliness, driving standards, customer service, meter use, payment options and passenger safety.
According to the results, all vehicles were found to be compliant with plate display requirements, clean and tidy, and showed no concerns relating to driving standards, meter usage or general safety.
Customer feedback was also largely positive, with two drivers described as “nice” and one singled out for their friendliness and professionalism.
The main area of concern related to driver identification badges. Of the 10 drivers checked, four were not displaying their badges at all, while a further four displayed them in a manner that meant passengers could not easily see them. The findings mean only two drivers were fully compliant with badge display requirements during the exercise.
The mystery shoppers also noted some reluctance among drivers when accepting card payments. However, no driver refused to take a card payment and no formal issues were recorded in that area.
Sharing the results with drivers, PC Quinton said: “Apart from the badge display issue, I am very happy with these results, and I hope you are too.”
The findings are likely to prompt renewed attention on badge display compliance, a key licensing requirement designed to help passengers easily identify licensed drivers and increase confidence in the safety of taxi services.
