In London, black cabs are a staple of city life, known for their ability to manoeuvre through busy streets to pick up and drop off passengers catering to all mobility needs.
However, there's often confusion among road users, including motorists and cyclists, about where these taxis are allowed to stop, particularly concerning cycle lanes and bus stops.
Bus Lanes and Stops: A Clear Picture
Transport for London (TfL) has established clear guidelines regarding the use of bus lanes and stops by taxis and private hire vehicles (PHVs). While taxis are generally permitted to drive in most bus lanes and use bus stops for pickups and drop-offs, there are specific restrictions. Notably, taxis are not allowed in a minority of bus lanes, and drivers must check signs at the start of each lane to confirm access to drive along them, however pick ups and drop off are permitted. Taxi drivers are able to pick up on bus stops, except for red routes at bus stops marked with a wide red line.
PHVs, however, face stricter rules. They are not allowed to drive in bus lanes but can use them briefly to pick up or set down passengers, provided they do so safely and exit promptly. PHVs are prohibited from stopping in 'bus stop clearways', identified by a wide yellow line, and on red routes at bus stops marked with a wide red line.
Cycle Lanes: An Essential Clarification
With the rise of cycle lanes in London, there's also a need for clarity regarding their use. In 2022 TfL announced that fines will be issued to motorists driving in cycle lanes marked by a solid white line or using cycle tracks on the TfL Road Network (TLRN).
However, licensed taxi drivers are an exception; they are allowed to enter these cycle lanes when necessary for picking up or dropping off passengers, ensuring essential access, especially for those needing wheelchair ramps.
