CCTV offer reaches 48 licensed Telford taxis as council outlines driver safety measures

Telford and Wrekin Council’s scrutiny report on the night-time economy sets out safety and enforcement work involving hackney carriages and private hire vehicles, including CCTV provision, taxi marshals and joint vehicle inspections.
The council offers free, professionally fitted CCTV to all locally licensed private hire vehicles and hackney carriages. The scheme is funded by the Community Safety Partnership, and 48 vehicles have had the equipment fitted voluntarily to date.
The report describes CCTV as an additional safety feature for residents and visitors, as well as for licensed drivers. It does not give a total number of eligible vehicles, so the proportion fitted cannot be calculated from the report.
Taxi marshals have also been funded by the Community Safety Partnership to support a safer night-time economy. The service operated mainly in Telford town centre, with additional coverage in Newport during peak periods.
The council works with West Mercia Police on vehicle stop operations that include inspections of private hire vehicles. Since October 2025, a reciprocal arrangement with Wolverhampton Council has also enabled Telford officers to inspect and suspend vehicles licensed by Wolverhampton.
During 2025, 18 breach of condition notices were issued to Telford vehicle proprietors, requiring defects or compliance issues to be corrected. The report gives examples including incorrectly fixed private hire plates, a defective headlamp and drivers not wearing their required private hire lanyards.
The council says its wider community safety work uses data and intelligence to identify hotspots associated with licensed premises, taxis and other community safety concerns, informing targeted enforcement and preventative measures.
